The time for popcorn, TV and loud cheers has come: March Madness 2016 has just started. Every year millions of Americans sit in front of TV and argue about their favorite teams winning the contest. For an outsider who doesn’t know anything about The States, it could be quite intriguing. What is this March Madness? Which teams are going to play this year, how has the tournament gone so far and what are their chances? We will try to answer many questions like that. So, let’s start with the first.

What is March Madness 2016?

March Madness is the top tournament where various universities compete for the topmost basketball title. It’s quite similar to the top games of other sports like Super Bowl for NFL and national championships for football. March Madness is the barometer of ranking for University basketball.

Why is it called “Madness”?

It’s a sport, and sports ignite passion. You’ll never know who will win and who will lose. An underdog can defeat the champion, and the champion could win it all. Nobody knows what is going to happen. Therefore, there is lots of suspense, speculation, and thrill in every match.

Although, both men and women teams play March Madness but mostly when we talk about the tournament, it’s about men. As still, Women sports don’t get as much coverage.

So, is it played in March?

Nope. The whole tournament does not get played in March. It starts from the last week of March and ends in the first week of April. The March Madness for this year will end on April 4.

Who plays it?

68 teams compete for the title wherein 32 teams come through the qualifiers, and a selection committee select another 36. These teams have four divisions: South, East, West, and Midwest. Each team has to compete for the top position in its division of 16.

Consequently, games decrease the number of remaining teams in the tournament with the first round contracting the number to 64 and the second to 32. The third round, known as sweet 16, reduces the number further to 16. In the fourth round, known as Elite Eight, teams are reduced to 8. The semifinals, played by the name of Final Four, lead to the title match.

So, what’s gone till now in March Madness 2016?

  • The divisions were won by Kansas, Oregon, Virginia, and North Carolina.
  • Middle Tennessee (15th position) defeated Michigan State (2nd position) to make the biggest upset of the tournament.
  • The current champion Duke will be playing with Oregon in the Sweet 16 round.

Oklahoma (2nd position) plays Villanova (2nd position)

A Brief summary of the match: both teams are strong, and the match will be worth to watch. Oklahoma is performing well with 15 points on both ends and the National second position with a goal percentage of 42.8. In the case of Villanova, the performance hasn’t been good in the regular seasons. However, it rectified by big wins earlier in the tournament.

North Carolina (first position) plays Syracuse (tenth position)

Timing: 2nd April (Saturday), 8:49 PM EST

A brief summary of the match: it will be a really big upset if Syracuse will be able to beat North Carolina. The Tar Heels are playing well so far and are the favorites to win this tournament. However, you can never know anything about anyone since it’s the Madness of March Madness 2016.
